Currency Guide Austria

Currency

The Euro(EUR) is now the official currency of Austria. Austria's prior currency, the Schilling, has now been phased out as legal tender and is no longer accepted.

Credit Cards

Most major credit cards and Eurocheque cards are accepted in large cities and tourist areas. However, credit cards are less widely accepted in Austria than they are in the USA or the UK and some smaller hotels may require bills to be paid in cash.

Traveller's Cheques

These are widely accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in Euro’s.

Currency Regulations

There are restrictions on the export of more than EUR7267.28, for which a permit is required.
