American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are all accepted. Check with your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available.
The import and export of local currencies are limited to DOP20,000 in notes and DOP100 in coins.
The import of foreign currencies must be declared if it exceeds USD10,000 and if this amount is to be re-exported.
The export of foreign currencies is free up to USD10,000 or equivalent. Larger amounts require authorisation from the central bank.

Despite what you might read in other currency guides, the Dominican Peso is available to purchase outside of the Dominican Republic and it is not illegal to carry the local currency into the country. Once in Dominican Republic a lot of merchandise will be priced in US Dollars and can be brought with US Dollars as well as the local currency. All money exchange must be done by dealers that have been approved by the central bank such as banks and hotels. Do not deal currency on the black market.
The banking hours in the Dominican Republic are Monday-Friday 8am-6pm.
