Major credit cards are accepted in large establishments in the big cities throughout Egypt. However, usage outside the big cities is extremely limited and Egypt is still a largely cash based country.
The import and export of local currency is limited to EGP5,000.

If you take Travellers cheques it is advisable to take them in US Dollars so as to avoid additional costs. Private exchange bureaux, called 'Forex', are open daily and banks in major hotels are open 24 hours to exchange currency. Most cash machines now accept VISA but this is not always the case.
The banking hours in Egypt are 8:30am – 2pm Sunday-Thursday.
