You can change money at any major bank or one of the numerous licensed money changers throughout Indonesia. Money exchangers are very picky about the state of your notes (if they are ripped or stained they will refuse to change), unless you are converting US Dollars in which they will exchange without hesitation although at an extremely poor exchange rate. Cash machines are also available in most major cities and are generally reliable. Travellers cheques can not always be changed and if you are lucky enough to find a place that does they will charge extortionate exhange rates.
Banking hours are from 8.00am to 2.00 pm Mondays to Fridays. Banks in hotels usually stay open longer hours while Money Changers are generally open everyday until late evening.
