Currency Exchange

You will get the best exchange rates if you use credit cards at cash machines in Poland. But if you want to change cash you may do that at airports, banks and exchange offices, called Kantors. Kantors generally offer a better rate than banks and Kantors also don't charge a fee and don't require any paperwork - except the Kantors at the airport or at train stations. It is best not to change money on the street as you may receive counterfeit money and such transactions are illegal. If you choose to change at the border you can exchange an unlimited amount of most currencies but beware that not all border crossings supply this service and when they do, the rates tend to be poor. Traveller's checks can be exchanged at the larger hotels but they generally only offer this service for guests and also charge a commission. The big banks like Pekao, PKO or NBP will also exchange them but again charge a fee of 1 up to 3 percent. Only at the American Express office is it free of charge.

Banks

The banking hours in Poland are Monday to Friday 9am-4pm and also Saturday 9am-1pm in the larger cities. In smaller towns, banking hours are more limited.
