The Euro(EUR) is now the official currency of San Marino. San Marino’s prior currency, the Italian Lira, has now been phased out as legal tender and is no longer accepted.
MasterCard, Visa and Eurocheque cards are widely accepted throughout San Marino. All establishment that accept credit cards show the VISA or Mastercard logo in their windows.
Travellers checks are accepted in all major cities and tourist areas, except in some very small establishments. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, it is best to take Euro travellers checks to Italy.
If you intend to bring an amount of currency exceeding EUR10,000, currency import restrictions may apply. In particular, the amount may have to be declared and validated in San Marino upon arrival. Check with the embassy in your home country before departure for more details.
