Most major credit cards are widely accepted with VISA and Mastercard being the most popular. American Express is generally only accepted in the more expensive establishments.
The banking hours are Monday to Friday 0830–1200 and 1300–1700.
The import of local currency is free.
The export of local currency is limited to US$5,000 or equivalent
The import of foreign currency is free, you may declare if you are wishing to export more than the allowed amount.
The export of foreign currency if limited to USD$5,000 or more if declared.

Currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange booths, post offices, airports and ferry ports; banks have the worst rates and highest commissions, but will exchange lesser known foreign currencies. Travellers cheques can be exchanged at some banks and currency exchange offices, but are not as welcome as cash or credit cards. Some places will accept US Dollars as payment and until the end of 2005 all shops will display prices in both Old Lira and New lira
