The Euro(EUR) is now the official currency of the Vatican City. The Vatican City’s prior currency, the Italian Lira, has now been phased out as legal tender and is no longer accepted.
MasterCard, Visa and Eurocheque cards are widely accepted throughout the Vatican City. All establishments that accept credit cards show the VISA or Mastercard logo in their windows.
Travellers checks are accepted in all major cities and tourist areas, except in some very small establishments. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, it is best to take Euro travellers checks.
If you intend to bring an amount of currency exceeding EUR10,000, currency import restrictions may apply. In particular, the amount may have to be declared and validated in the Vatican City upon arrival. Check with the embassy in your home country before departure for more details.
